New Design Trends

DWR carries classic contemporary furniture, but notice how this furniture harkens back to antiques and traditional “brown furniture”

Irwin Viner - Interior design styles always come and go. Sometimes outdated styles come back in fashion, and every so often the hottest trends curdle overnight and you’re left with something that current fashion dictates as silly. At IWI we always try to err on creating interiors with a style sense that will age well. We hear from many of our clients that the interiors we designed for them 30 years ago still look fresh and exciting.

DWR, which pushes design styles and trends, is also now promoting “timeless” pieces that will stand the test of time

That’s not to say that we’re not aware of trends and what’s hot in interior design. We carefully map out where we’ve been, where we’re going, and where we think everything is heading. We try to advise our clients on what’s current, what’s almost on its way out, what should become fashionable, and what’s good enough to be timeless and enduring.

A quick summary is in order. In the Twentieth Century, we went from Art Deco to 1940s to mid-Century to 1970s, and so on., and we ended up in the 1980s with warm colors and tons of pattern and fabrics as in the movie Bonfire of the Vanities.

Because we didn’t come up with anything as innovative as the differing 20th Century styles, we reissued them in the same order and largely under the heading of Retro. Like fashion, these styles came back slightly altered and they had shorter shelf lives as they were really trends and styles that we’d seen before. Typical comment, “My mother used to have a chair that looked just like that!”

Once again, we’re going from mid-Century and 1970s to traditional, but not as glam as the original 1980s wave.. The stark, clean lines and cool (gray) colors of the last few years is being replaced by warm and cozy. The world’s a little cold and gray right now so some warmth is welcome.

When you’re working on a new design scheme or refreshing an older decor, question yourself about the design trends that you see all around you. Do you have a favorite design style? What style makes you feel most at home? Can you see yourself living every day with a particular style? Which style do you think will stand the test of time (i.e., it looks fresh and it ages well)?
